Change of leadership for Yandex in Russia

0 26 August 2014

From 1st September Yandex’s Russian business will be headed by Alexander Shulgin, the company’s former finance director. The Russian business is currently headed by Yandex founder Arkady Volozh. He will remain in overall charge of Yandex, focussing on looking for new business models and markets. The post of finance director will go to Greg Abovsky, according to the company’s official release.

Arkady Volozh:

“Yandex is a hugely successful business in Russia. Managing an office of such importance for the company takes a lot of time and effort. I’m glad that Alexander Shulgin will be taking the post. He is exactly the kind of person to guide the Russian business. By delegating this part of the business I will be able to concentrate on strategic questions, such as looking for new business models, new markets and new sphere’s in which to apply our technology.”

Shulgin joined Yandex as finance director in 2010 and in 2011 the company was floated on the Nasdaq stock exchange under his stewardship for the first time. Before Yandex, Shulgin worked for Coca-Cola for 10 years, in various different finance roles, becoming its director of finance in Russia in 2007. He has a management degree from the Rostov State University.

Greg Abovsky has been Yandex’s vice-president of investor relations and corporate development since 2013. He began his investment banking career at Morgan Stanley, and spent more than 14 years working in various management positions in finance, media and technology. He has a degree in economics and Russian literature from Brown University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
